Carpenter Hall is an Engineering building located at Cornell University and designed by architecture firm Perkins and Will of Chicago, and opened in 1957. The mission of this project is to renovate the first floor of the Carpenter Hall and create welcoming, comfortable, and multi-functional working+entertainment spaces for Cornell faculties and students. The goals of this project include: 1. Better lighting and acoustical controls. 2. Renovated furniture which can support better circulations. 3. Able to support big and small gatherings. 4. Renovate unused areas by designing new offices and interview rooms. Overall, the design concept of this renovation project is to divide the whole floor into two main sections: the loud area and the quiet area. The loud area includes the Engineering Library and the Study Rooms. The quiet area includes different offices and the interview rooms. The loud area focuses on supporting students’ studying activities and the quiet area supports faculties’ working activities. The main color of the whole project is blue, yellow, and gray. They can support the sense of calmness. The hanging decorative ceiling, the irregular shape of lighting, and the modern furniture can provide a sense of cheerfulness.
